There’s no time like the holidays in Orange County. There may not be snowmen to make, but that doesn’t mean we’re not celebrating the season. If your stockings have already been hung by the chimney with care, then it’s time to check out some events around town, and hear all the lovely sounds of the season!

Knott’s Merry Farm

The Nutcracker

Golden West College, 15751 Gothard Street, Huntington Beach

December 9-23

Is it really the holidays if you don’t see The Nutcracker? Well, sure, but it’ll always feel like you’ve forgotten something. The Nutcracker is a seasonal tradition for a reason, with fantastic imagery, drama and iconic music proving itself year after year. The tradition is alive and well in the OC. This season, check out the production of the Ballet Repertory Theater staged at Golden West College, starting its 41st production of the seasonal ballet.

X with the Meat Puppets

The Observatory, 3503 S Harbor Blvd, Santa Ana

December 23, 8:00PM

‘Twas the night before the night before Christmas and all through the house, not a creature was stirring -because they realized X was playing their 40th anniversary show at the Observatory. SoCal punk lifers to the end are ringing in a major milestone, and scrunching it in just two days before Christmas. This means for sure you can’t procrastinate on your last- minute Boxing Day shopping.

December 21, 8:00PM

The Segerstrom Art Center’s annual Fiesta Navidad is pairing this year with LA/LA to present Mariachi Los Camperos for an evening holiday performance. This concert, featuring Grammy-winning performers and holiday flair, will be a night to remember.

Surfin’: An Ultimate Beach Boys Christmas Concert

December 20th, 7:30PM

Don the Beachcomber, 16278 PCH, Huntington Beach

Celebrating Christmas with Surfin’- The Beach Boys Tribute group falls squarely in the overlap of a Venn diagram of things that are “Completely Californian” and “Completely Christmas”. The boys in Surfin’, 5 professional musicians, play crisp, eerily accurate renditions of even the most challenging Beach Boys originals, plus holiday favorites with a surf-rock twist. Dressing the part, Surfin’s holiday tribute performance promises to be “fun, fun, fun, until daddy takes the reindeer away”.

Unsilent Night

December 15th, 7:00PM

325 N Glassell St, Orange

In what may be one of the most unique sound experiences this season, Justin Smith hosts Phil Kline’s Unsilent Night in Orange. Like traditional caroling meets Say Anything, Unsilent Night invites the audience to become participants, and gather with portable music players (boom boxes are optimal, but smart phones work too) to perform a synchronized playback of various musical tracks into one undulating sound piece. Attendees are encouraged to download a track beforehand from the Unsilent Night website to be ready to join the crowd in an unprecedented holiday event.
