Audiological Evaluations
Comprehensive hearing assessment provided by a certified clinical audiologist. We provide a comprehensive assessment of outer, middle, and inner ear function.
- Otoscopic Examination: Inspection of the outer ear to assess wax build-up, infection, and abnormalities of ear canal and eardrum.
- Audiological Assessment: Evaluations include measures of hearing sensitivity of air and bone conducted sounds and measures of speech discrimination ability.
- Middle Ear Assessment (Tympanometry): Assesses how well the eardrum is moving to asses if there is fluid or other middle ear related disorders.
- Acoustic Reflex Threshold: Assesses the integrity of the auditory and facial nerves by presenting beeps into the ear and measuring the contraction of the stapedial muscle in response to those beeps.
- Inner ear Assessment (Otoacoustic Emission Testing): Sounds are presented into the ear and a tiny microphone measures responses from outer hair cells located in the inner ear.
Hearing Aid Evaluation/Real Ear Measurement
With our real ear measurement system, we can now measure and record the actual performance of your hearing aids while they are in your ears. This computer analysis helps us to verify that your hearing aid prescription is precisely matched to your individual requirements.
Hearing Aid Dispensing and Services
Orange County Physicians Hearing Services offers a wide variety of hearing instruments featuring the latest technology. Our staff emphasizes ongoing cleaning and maintenance after your hearing aid purchase to insure you receive optimum performance and benefit from your hearing aids. We also provide information on available assistive listening devices such as audio induction loops, infrared systems and FM modulated systems, as well as TV listening devices and telephone amplifiers.
Balance testing
We provide videonystagmography (VNG) assessments to evaluate central and peripheral function of the balance system. A VNG appointment takes approximately 2 hours and specific instructions will be provided when the assessment is recommended and scheduled.
Pediatric Services
Newborn Hearing Screenings
In 2006, the state of California mandated that all newborns receive a hearing screening before discharge from the hospital. We offer follow up otoacoustic emission (OAE) screenings, as well as diagnostic auditory brainstem response (ABR) testing to determine auditory synchrony and integrity.
- Otoscopic Examination: Inspection of the outer ear to assess wax build-up, infection, and abnormalities of ear canal and eardrum.
- Otoacoustic Emissions: Sounds are presented into your child’s ear and a tiny microphone measures responses from outer hair cells located in the inner ear.
- Auditory Brainstem Response: Electrodes are placed on the forehead and behind the ear of your newborn. Sounds are presented through earphones or bone conduction vibrator and the electrodes record the brain’s response to sound.
- Audiological Evaluations: Complete hearing testing for all ages provided by a certified clinical audiologist. We provide a comprehensive assessment of outer, middle, and inner ear function.
Audiological Assessment
- Visual Reinforcement: Tones are presented to your child through earphones or speakers, the clincian will watch for head turns toward the sounds. When your child turns, a toy will light up for reinforcement.
- Conditioned Play Audiometry: During Conditioned Play Audiometry a child is seated across from the audiologist or test assistant and is instructed to place a toy in a bucket or a peg in a board when a sound is heard. Sounds are presented through earphones but may also be presented through sound field speakers. Initial sounds are presented at an audible level to familiarize the child with the task. Once the child is conditioned or understands the task, progressively softer sounds are presented.
- Speech Audiometry: The audiologist will ask your child repeat words or point to pictures to determine the softest speech sounds that they are able to hear.
- Traditional Audiometry: If your child is old enough, the audiologist will have them raise their hand when they hear a sound.
Assessment of middle ear function
- Tympanometry: a test of middle ear function allowing us to determine how your child’s eardrum is moving and asses for fluid or other middle ear related disorders.
- Acoustic Reflex Threshold: assesses the integrity of the auditory and facial nerves by presenting beeps into the ear and measuring the contraction of the stapedial muscle in response to those beeps.
Diagnostic Otoacoustic Emissions
- Otoacoustic Emissions: sounds are presented into your child’s ear and a tiny microphone measures responses from outer hair cells located in the inner ear.
